The first phase of polling in Assam Assembly 2016 concluded peacefully yesterday. The official voting percentage is 78.06 as per election commission of Assam. Its much higher percentage than previous assembly election in 2011. The next phase of poll will be held on 11 April 2016. The counting of votes will take place on 19th May 2016.
Total of 539 candidates are in the fray for 65 constituencies in Assam. In most constituencies, its expected that there would be straight contests between between Congress and BJP and Allies. It is first time in Assam that BJP is a major political force. CM tarun Gogoi, BJP CM candidate Sarbananda Sonowal are in the fray.
There were not many violent incidences during the polling. A bomb blast took place at Dudhnoi, Goalpara district in the afternoon which is considered not related to polls, but it claimed two lives injuring more than 20 people.
Assam has always witnessed high voter turnout. It is also assumed that voting percentage would be high in the next phase of polls too.
For BJP, Sarbananda Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma and other central leaders are campaigning at various parts of Assam while for Congress, CM tarun Gogoi, his son Gaurav Gogoi are spearheading the campaign.
