Wild Life in Assam : Kaziranga National Park

Assam has lot to offer to wild life enthusiast, wildlife photographers with five national parks! The national parks are home to one horned rhino ( rhinoceros), tiger, golden languor, Indian wild dogs, wild buffalo even wild horses apart from many rare and migratory birds!

Two of its national parks, Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park are designated as world heritage site!

The national parks are :-

4. Rajib Gandhi National PArk
5. Dibru Saikhowa National Park

1. Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is mostly famous for its one horned rhinoceros world wide and attracts visitors from many countries around the world yearly. Spread over 430 square kilometer, it is located on the southern bank of mighty Brahmaputra, the male river in India, in Golaghat district of Assam.

Apart from the famous one horned rhinoceros, it is also home to tiger, elephants, swamp deer, Hog badger, Capped langur, Hollock gibbon, leopards etc.

It also has many type of birds including migratory birds from Russia and other countries which come here during winter every year.

How to spot Rhinoceros ?

Elephant ride in Kaziranga is easiest way to visit the park as well as spot rhinoceros. Apart from elephant ride, Jeeps and cars are available.

How to reach Kaziranga ?

The nearest airport is Jorhat in Assam which is around 96KM to where Jet Airways as well as Indian Airlines fly from Guwahati. Situated at 217km from Kaziranga, Guwahati is a major airport in Eastern India which is very well connected from all metro cities as well as state capitals. It is also well connected with all other states in India with at least one direct train to Guwahati. There are almost seven daily trains from Delhi to Guwahati.
There are good buses plying regularly to Kaziranga from Guwahati which takes approximately four hours to reach.

When to travel ?

Kaziranga National Park(KNP) is closed during summer due to flood. It is normally open from 1st October to April in a year. So, best time to visit KNP is from 1st October to 30th April.

Accommodation in Kaziranga

There are hotels available in Kaziranga National Park which also organises elephant rides, Jeep for park visit. They also provide you with multi-lingual guides. Forest IBs are also available.

Travel Advise

It is best to travel in a group of 4/5 people and reach Guwahati by either flight or train. Then proceed to KNP either buy bus or hire a car. It is advised to book accomdation at Kaziranga in advance.
