Cities and towns in Assam and North East India witnessed unprecedented celebration after India won ICC World Cup 2011 defeating Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is India’s second victory of the cup after 28 years when it last won in 1983 at Lords, London.
As soon as Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a huge six to surpass Sri Lanka total of 274, fans came out to street and started dancing and congratulating each other, known or unknown in all cities and towns in North East India. The frenzied celebration continued till late night.
The match started at 2:30PM on 2nd April and after wining the toss, Sri Lanka set a target of 275 after batting first.
India’s chase started disastrously when big hitter Virender Sehwag was out in the very first over without any run scored. Soon after,Sachin Tendulkar followed at 31 in 7th over and deafening silence dawned in Wankhede stadium in Mumbai and all social networking sites ( Twitter/Facebook) were filled with disappointed messages by Indian fans across the globe!
But Virat Kohli and Gutam Gambhir had steadied Indian innings and brought the score to 114 when Virat Kohl was out. Then Mahendra Singh Dhoni came to bate ahead of his usual batting position. Both Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni had brought the score to 223 and the victory was now almost certain again!
Gautam Gambhir departed at 223 and Yuvaraj Singh came to bat. At 48.2 overs, Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a huge six surpassing Sri Lankan total of 274 and India became the third country in the world to win the cup two times!
