Assam Assembly Election update week – 6

This is the second last update on Assam Assembly Election 2011. The final update will after 13th May 2011 when the votes would be counted and result would be declared. Since EVM ( Electronic Voting Machine) is being used, we can expect all the result by afternoon itself.

The campaign for second and final phase of voting for 64 seats in lower Assam had come to an end yesterday on 9th April 2011. An electorate of more than 96lacs would decide 64 MLAs among 596 candidates on 11 April 2011.

This week remained less violent except few clashes among supporters of various parties. Here are few interesting incidents related to Assam Assembly election 2011:-

1. Arrest of Akhil Gogoi

Akhil Gogoi was arrested today along with his supporters while he was trying to organise a rally on corruption by Congress Government in Guwahati. He was arrested on charges of election code violation.

2. BPF not averse to forming alliance with AGP

After APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita attacked BPF in Kokrajhar for lack of development and corruption, Hagrama Mohilari retorted that BPF is not averse to forming alliance AGP, BJP of even AIUDF, bringing rift between coalition between Congress and BPF in Assam.

3. Two killed in Gosaigaon, Kokrajhar

Two people were killed when AIUDF supporters went on rampaging in Gosaigaon after AIUDF leader Badaruddin Ajaml’s helicopter failed to land. MP SK Bismutiari’s convoy was also attacked by unruly crowd. Police had to resort to firing in the air to control the mob.

4. Few interesting seats

Jalukabari, Samguri, Dispur are few seats where people would be interested to know the result. Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting from Jalukbari and likely to win, but Pradyut Bora wil clean image from BJP is also contesting, making it interesting.
Samguri is another seat where former CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Congress minister Rockybul Hussain are contesting each other. This constituency has also witnessed many clashes between AGP and Congress workers.
