Assam Assembly Election update week – 5

This week has been quite eventful one with all top national leaders from almost all parties participating in the Assam Assembly Election 2011 visited Assam and campaigned for their respective candidates. The top leaders included PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani etc.

Apart from the usual campaigning, there were also couple of clashes reported between party workers at different places injuring several people. There are also few reports of firing at houses of party leaders.

Here are few Assam Election related incidents that took place in Assam :-

1. KPLT killed 3 CRPF jawans on poll duty

Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) militants, ambushed a patrol party of the paramilitary force at Deothar in Karbi Anglong district in central Assam Saturday just two days before the first phase of Assembly polls in Assam killing three on the spot and injuring two.

he KPLT had given a call for an indefinite district bandh from Thursday last as it had not received a reply from the political parties to its five-point charter of demands, including autonomous statehood for Karbi Anglong, halt operations against the outfit and development of the education facilities here. Karbi Anglong district will go to the polls on Monday (April 4) with 61 other constituencies in the first phase of voting in the state.

2. PM Manmohan Singh campaigned for Congress

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh came on 2nd April 2011 to campaign for Congress party in Assam. He chose to address election meeting in Dhakuakhana where Bharat Narah, a minister in Tarun Gogoi cabinet in Assam. Incidentally, Dhakuakhana is one of the most backward constituency in Assam and Bharat Narah is the richest candidate in the fray in Assam Election 2011 with more than Rs. 6croe worth of wealth.

Anti-Talk faction of ULFA, led by Paresh Barua had called fro 12 hours Assam Bandh during his visit. Also more than 10 local students bodies Dhakuakhana called for Dhakuakhana Bandh opposing PM Manmohan Singh’s Dhakuakhana visit.

3. Sonia Gandhi, L K Advani, Shatrughan Sinha came to campaign

Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani, Shatrughan Sinha came to Assam to campaign for BJP and urged voter to vote for BJP at various places in upper Assam and Barak Valley. L K Advani highlighted Congress corruption and asked voters to vote our Congress.

Charismatic BJP Leader and Gujrat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi asked voters to vote for BJP as Assam could be as developed as Gujrat.

Sonia Gandhi had outlined development and peace initiatives by Congress Government led by Tarun Gogoi and asked voters to give another chance to continue the development work.

4. Campaign for first phase comes to an end

Campaigning for first phase of polling to be held on 4th April had come to an end on 2nd April evening. The poll will be held for 62 seats, mainly in upper Assam and Barak Valley.

Himanta Biswa Sarma and another Congress Candidate Jamal Uddin Ahmed from Badarpur were censured by election commission for violating model code of conduct.
