Turmoil in North Eastern Hill University (NEHU)

North Eastern Hill University, popularly known as NEHU has been in the news for students staging non-operation protest against recently appointed vice chttp://www.northeastblog.in/wp-admin/post-new.phphancellor A.N. Rai. NEHU students are demanding his removal as Vice Chancellor for the prestigious university of the North East India.

KSU ( Khasi Students Union) has also supported agitating NEHU students with demanding a tribal person be appointed as vice chancellor.

NEHU was set up by an act of parliament in India on 19th July 1973. This act reads for establishment of this university “to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the North-eastern region, and in particular, the intellectual, academic and cultural advancement”.

North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and Meghalaya Tribal Students’ Coordination Committee (MTSCC), who are spearheaded the agitation against A N Rai, accuse Mr. Rai of having a tainted credentials while he was Vice Chancellor of Mizoram University.

Union HRD ( Human Resource Development) Minister Kapil Sibal had initiated sending of central team to sort out the differences between students and the VC. Meghalaya Governor R S Mushahary has been tasked with the job.
