Few Birding Destinations of Assam

Assam is one of the most exciting birding destinations in India which boasts of more than 800 species of birds. There are many birds which are endemic to Assam only. It has dense forest, grass lands, marshy lands, river and many water bodies which are known as ‘beel’ in Assamese language, to host variety of bird species. These water bodies all across Assam attract thousands of migratory birds during winters apart from many residents here.

Here are few list of birding sites in Assam:-

1. Kaziranga National Park
This world famous Kaziranga National Park in Assam is majorly know for its one horned rhino. But this national park is also unique as it has highest density of tigers and many bird species. Pied Falconet, Great Myna, Bengal Florican, Finn’s Weaver etc are few of the many bird species one can hope to find here.

2. Nameri National Park

This is located at the foot of great Himalaya range of mountains in Assam. It has rarities like Blyth’s Kingfisher, Blue-naped Pitta, Black Baza etc.

3. Guwahati

Guwahati is the main city in Assam as well as North East India which is well connected from all major cities in India. It has few wild life sanctuaries in its vicinity including a bird sanctuary at Deepor Beel. One cansee greater adjutant stork in dumping ground near VIP road. At Deepor Beel, one can see lesser adjutant stork, Pallas’ Sea Eagle, Baer’s Pochard etc. Apart from, Amsing forest is nearby where one can find Indian Golden Oriole.

4. Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

This park is famous for White-winged Duck, a large duck species which is endangered and found in Assam. Apart from this rarity, one can find many other bird species and other mammals like clouded leopard, feral horses etc.

5. Majuli And Jhanjimukh

Majuli is supposed to be largest river island which has many water bodies, beels, marshes. These water bodies have many resident birds as well as attract many migratory birds like Greylag Goose. They also have large numbers of resident birds like Purple Moorhen, White Breasted Waterhen, Bronze Winged Jacana etc.
