While there has been wide support by various civil societies, section of Manipur society have supported the call for plebiscite, now former Chief Minister of Manipur and State chief of Nationalist Congress Party ( NCP ), Radhabinod Koijam has backed the plebiscite call by UNLF chief R K Megen in an election meeting for Imphal Municipal Council election.
The call for plebiscite in Manipur picked up after UNLF chief R K Megen declined talks offer by government of India and called for plebiscite instead.
Radhabinod Koijam had mentioned that all possible means should be exercised to find an amicable solution to the insurgency problem in Manipur. The small state Manipur in North East India can boast of highest number of outlawed insurgent group demanding separate independent country of Manipur.
Strongly advocating peoples’ participation in resolving the Indo-Manipur conflict, Radhabinod Koijam also called upon leaders of civil society organisations to take the initiative for bringing insurgent groups to the negotiating table.
Manipur, which is a sports power house in the country with 25lacs population, has many unique incidents like women protesting naked in front of Indian Military installation, Irom Sharmila on hunger strike for more than 10 years etc.
UNLF Chief R K Meghen comes from a royal family lineage Bir Tikendrajit who fought against British and was hanged publicly by British.
