A six member team of senior BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party) led by its national president, Nitin Gadkari and comprising its national vice president, Bijoya Chakravarty, MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dr Kirit Somaiya, Tapir Gao and Sarbananda Sonowal called on the President to submit a memorandum and copies of its fact finding team on scams of North Eastern India.
Sarbananda Sonowal had recently joined BJP in presence of BJP president Nitin Gadkarni in Dibrugarh with much fan fare and was immediately included as general secretary.
Nitin Gadkarni had informed president Smt. Pratibha Patil that ministers of the Congress-ruled States were involved in scams and development funds sanctioned from Delhi hardly ever reach the people, leading to rise of insurgency. He pointed towards existence of nexus among ministers-bureaucrats-extremists. The BJP national president insisted on immediate actions against the guilty ministers.
According to BJP, a scam of more than 63,000 crores may have taken place in North East India.
This recent BJP hue and cry over scams in North East India have been widely seen as to grab headlines by BJP ahead of assembly election in Assam. But, BJP had been quite active in North East India specially after it came to power in 1998. This started their famous “Look East policy” to connect North East India with other Asian countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam through land road. They had also come out with vision document specially for Assam and North East India.
