ATASU presses demand for ST status to Tai Ahoms in Assam

The student organsation of Tai Ahom community in Assam ATASU (All Tai Ahom Students Union) members on 4th March 2011 staged a sit in New Delhi seeking inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Tribe category as per the Article 342 of the Indian Constitution.
Atasu general secretary Moyur Borgohain said, “The ST status is a long-pending demand of the Tai Ahom community. They should be categorized as ST and incorporated in the list of ST (Plains).”

It may be mentioned that Tai Ahoms ruled Assam for almost 600 years from 1228 AD to 1826AD when it was annexed to British India after Yandabu Treaty with Burma.

With population of over 40 lacs, Ahoms are mostly living in upper Assam’s wealthy districts Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sibasagar, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji.

Many people ridicule the demand of ST status by Ahoms due to their glorious past while some support this demand as this may help implementation of constitutional safeguard against illegal Bangladesh migrants.

Many wealthy people like present Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, Union Cabinet Minister B K Handique belong to Tai Ahom community.

At this critical juncture of the Assamese society , all the ethnic backward communities of Assam like the Ahoms , Chutias , Muttock , Moran , and Koch Rajbongshis should be immediately accorded ST (plains) status to save Assam from becoming another Bangladesh.
Assembly seats for all these communities must be reserved accordingly and only then , yes I repeat only then , our next generation will be saved from the clutches of the growing number of Bangladeshis and Assamese as a language and as a community will survive in India.

It is only because assamese indeginious people like Ahoms ,Chutias,Moran, etc are not accorded the st status there is a vast gap between the assamese community and the other northeastern communities who dont even consider now the assamese people to be a part of northeast. if this current situation goes on being very soon we the people of assam will loose our originality but have to be called as bangladeshis only. givin st status to the indegeneous people of assam will not only bring unity among the people of north east but will also help in a peaceful sentiment and satisfaction in peoples mind.
