Seven policemen were killed and six others were injured when suspected NSCN-IM militants ambushed returning convoy of Phungyar MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing at the top of a hill about half a kilometre away from Riha village, 16 kms on the south of Litan PS of Ukhrul in Manipur.
The MLA received minor injuries in the ambush that was laid by the insurgents at a place not far away from Riha village where he had attended a convention on HIV/AIDS.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police suspect the hand of the outlawed Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) in the ambush. The NSCN-IM is active in the area and hence we suspect it to be their handiwork.
Manipur is home to about 20-odd rebel groups with demands ranging from secession to greater autonomy. More than 10000 lives have been lost due to insurgency related violence in Manipur so far. There has also been report that Manipur tops the list of internal population migration percentage wise which can be attributed to violence in Manipur.
