In an interesting turn of events, KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti ) leader, Mr. Akhil Gogoi has threatened to launch an economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh if government of Arunachal Pradesh was adamant on constructing big dam on upper ridges of Brahmaputra River.
Addressing a rally at North Lakhimpur on 31st July 2010, Mr. Akhil Gogoi has re-iterated KMSS demand for scrapping big dams in NE region and opined that Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district would face grave dangers due to the big dams in Arunachal Pradesh.
If the Arunachal Pradesh Government doesn’t pay any heed to our outcry against mega dams, we have no way out but to resort to economic blockade against the neighbouring State that gets all essential commodities via Assam,” Gogoi said, and added: “Now most of the organizations and political parties in Assam, including the ruling Congress, have been opposing mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh.”
Recent Naga students economic blockade is fresh in every body’s mind. It would be interesting to observe how government of Arunachal Pradesh as well as student organisations in Arunachal Pradesh reacts to this threat.
