Indian anti terror investigation agency National Investigation Agency (NIA), which was formed after Mumbai Terror attack on 26 Nov 2008, has arrested Anthony Shimrey, a senior leader of National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) (I-M).
Anthony Shimrey, the head of the Foreign Affairs department of the NSCN (I-M), has been arrested by NIA in connection with gun running ( buying arms and ammunition from illegal markets from China and other South East Asian countries and selling them to other North East Indians insurgent groups).
According to Assam Tribune, Anthony Shimrey was arrested in Nepal as soon as he landed in Kathmandu from Bangkok by Nepalese security forces. He was recently handed over to NIA.
NIA claims that, Anthony Shimrey was arrested in Bihar Nepal border. NSCN (IM) is in ceasefire agreement since 1997 and held many rounds of talks with government of India without much headway.
NSCN (IM) maintains close links with other outlawed insurgent groups like ULFA ( United Liberation Front of Asom), NDFB, ANVC, HNLC and supply them with arms and ammunition. With recent crack down by pro-India government in Dhaka, ULFA leaders are on the run.
With arrest of Anthony Shimrey, these groups may find it more difficult to procure arms. However, highly placed security sources said that it is too early to say whether the arrest of the NSCN leader would have any impact on the ongoing peace talks with the outfit.
