Jairam Ramesh would inform Assam’s concern to PM

Jairam Ramesh,Union minister of state for environment, was in Guwahati for consultation with anti-dam activists from North East India who have been protesting against big dams in Arunachal Pradesh. These protests are led by KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) leader Akhil Gogoi, AASU ( All Assam Student Union), TMPK ( Takam Mising Parin Kebang) or Mising Student Union, Student and civil rights groups in Arunachal Pradesh. There are many environment groups too who are actively campaigning against big dams in North East India.

The meeting was attended by many leaders like Akhil Gogoi, Samujjal Bhattacharyya, noted academic and intellectual Dr. Hiren Gohain etc. Jairam Ramesh was seen arguing with many of these leaders. Akhil Gogoi pleaded earnestly to stop construction of dams in Arunachal Pradsh as it would prove disastrous for people living in plains of Assam.

Samujjal Bhattacharyya warned that AASU would continue to agitate if the dam construction is not halted.

Dr. Hiren Gohain walked out of the meeting when he was asked to cut short his speech by the Minister.

Jairam Ramesh announced, “I would let the Prime Minister know about the apprehensions of the people of Assam regarding building of dams in Arunachal Pradesh. This is not just the issue for Assam, this has been an issue for the entire nation.”
