The Signature Peace Award to Irom Sharmila was conferred by the 12th Signature Sarva Gunah Sampannah Award Selection Committee in recognition of her unwavering dedication and selfless sacrifice for the people of Manipur in particular and North East in general, at the premises of the security ward of the JN Hospital where she is being currently lodged and force-fed.
The peace award carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a citation and a trophy laced with an ethnic Assamese headgear and shawl.
She has been conferred with the award in recognition of ‘decade-long epic protest against the might of the State, to repeal AFSPA’. Frailty of body brought about by her fast has only strengthened her resolve to change the tide of time ushering in peace in the region for all time to come, said a release from the awarding institution.
Irom Chanu Sharmila has completed 10 years hunger strike demanding repeal of AFSPA. She has been awarded by many organisation so far but her demand is still to be fulfilled or any meaningful discussion has bee initiated by Government of India.
