AGP ( Assam Gana Parishad), a party which came into existence after in 1985 after six year Assam agitation led by AASU ( All Assam Students Union), has also joined the anti-dam agitation in Assam today by organising a massive rally in Gerukamukh, Dehamji, Assam.
Recently, anti-dam protests are gaining popularity which is being spear headed by charismatic leader Akhil Gogoi. Even Medha Patkar had joined him in a recent massive rally against big dams in North East India.
Around 10 thousand people gathered from Dehmaji, Lakhimpur, Dhakuakhana, Jonai gheraoed the NHPC construction site for several hours. District administration had imposed Sec 144crPC in the construction site along with large number of security personals. They have also pressed ambulances and water tanks into service.
It is reported that, top AGP leaders refused to proceed further after 200meters from main gate of the construction site. AGP president, Chandra Mohan Patowary, former Chief Minister of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Former MP Birendra Kumar Baishya, local AGP leader Dilip Saikia etc. attended the rally.
Lower Subansiri Hydel power project by NHPC is supposed to generate 2000MW of electricity once commissioned. This river Subansiri, known as Abonori n local Mising people, was blocked in 1950 earth quake. And the artificial dam created was breached after a week which created flash flood killing many people as well as destroying properties.
